Alone Again, Naturally

appleIf you can pick it, pluck it, milk it, or shoot it, you can eat it.  ~ Suzanne Somers

It is troubling to me when I hear something like this:

I think the most discouraging thing with Dr. Simeons’ theory is when he says you can go back to normal eating and still hold your weight does not seem to work out very well.

And yes, that is an actual client quote.

First, this person was correct. However, before starting to doubt the process, consider this:

Yes, it was Dr. Simeons’ “theory” that after the protocol it was feasible to return to “normal” eating. Remember, a theory is simply an unproven explanation.

Second, Pounds and Inches was written in the 1950s. There is a HUGE difference between the foods available today vs. the food back then.

In the 1950s, you couldn’t find a McDonalds, Burger King, or Wendy’s on every street corner. Now they are located around the world. Back then, no one talked about Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). There was no obesity epidemic. Most people cooked and ate at home; going out to eat was saved for special occasions. People did a lot more physical work. Livestock weren’t fed hormones. Additionally, portion sizes were a heck of a lot smaller than today.

Things have changed dramatically since then. Our bodies are handling a whole host of new issues not existing before.  It stands to reason, Dr. Simeons’ reference of going back to “normal” eating is vastly different than today’s new normal.

By today’s standards, normal eating involves instant and impulse foods. “Food” is manufactured for one purpose — and I can assure you this purpose is not nutrition.

It’s money. And it’s to keep us coming back for more. Processed, packaged, manufactured food is made of a host of chemicals and preservatives.

Here’s why:

  • Chemicals/preservatives give it a longer shelf life.
  • The food tastes good, even when no nutritional value is added.
  • Food continues to taste good even when it’s rancid, or past its sell by date.
  • Its effect on your body is to make you forget you are full.
  • It stimulates your appetite so you want to eat more.

In order to maintain hCG Protocol weight loss, it is imperative to establish a new normal.

Suzanne Somers said it best, “pick it, pluck it, milk it, shoot it.” By following these four guidelines and making food choices based on these principles will upgrade your diet.

When buying any type of prepackaged foods, it is critical to become an avid label reader. Focusing on the numbers, i.e., calories, sodium, carbs, fats, sugar counts are not sufficient to raise your diet’s nutritional bar.

The prepackaged food ingredients will guide your decisions in making the best food choices. Be on the lookout for or be wary of the following:

  • If there are ingredients you cannot pronounce, don’t get it.
  • If a food item contains MSG or MSG substitutes, don’t get it.

This site contains more details on chemically laden foods; and how and where to avoid them. (WARNING: The site is not designed to scare and make you afraid to eat anything; it is simply to help you become a well-informed consumer.)

  • Canned tomatoes are a particular culprit.  Check the ingredients before buying.
  • Chicken can fool you. (Recently, while reading the ingredients, carrageenan was listed in a package of 100% Natural Chicken.) Who would’ve thought?
  • Never trust anything saying “natural flavors”.
  • Never trust anything saying “natural spices”.
  • Avoid anything with Aspartame.

Your best bet is to always stick with basic ingredients.  Make everything from scratch, like grandma used to do. In fact, follow author Michael Pollen’s advice: If your grandmother wouldn’t recognize an ingredient as food, then you shouldn’t eat it.

When able, purchase organic. These days, the cost of organic has become very comparable to regular foods.  When buying flesh proteins look for wild caught fish, free range or pastured chickens and pork, and grass-fed beef and lamb.  The quality and nutritional benefits will help your body run at optimal performance.

Being dedicated to label reading, purchasing high quality foods, preparing more home cooked meals will have a stabilizing effect and result in a successful maintenance program.

Don’t ever give up the fight.

Keep vigilant. Eat real food. Your body will thank you for it.
